It is the first state to license and regulate LPs, offering clients an alternative to traditional legal representation while maintaining high professional standards. The program was established as part of Arizona's initiative to address the increasing need for affordable legal services, particularly in underserved communities.

1. Represent Clients in Family Law Matters

Legal Paraprofessionals are licensed to represent clients in court for a variety of family law cases. This means they can act as your legal advocate throughout hearings, negotiations, and other proceedings, just as an attorney would.

Family law encompasses a wide range of issues, including:

• Divorce Proceedings: Legal Paraprofessionals guide clients through the legal process of divorce, ensuring their rights are protected during negotiations over marital assets, custody, and support.
• Child Custody and Support: Whether you’re seeking sole custody, shared custody, or modifying a custody agreement, Legal Paraprofessionals can advocate on your behalf in court. They also assist in determining and enforcing child support arrangements.
• Paternity Cases: Establishing paternity is crucial for securing custody, visitation, and support rights. Legal Paraprofessionals can represent parents during paternity disputes or agreements.

An LP cannot offer assistance in any of the following Family Law areas:

• Preparation of a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) and supplemental orders dividing retirement assets.
• Division or conveyance of formal business entities or commercial property.
• An appeal to the court of appeals or supreme court.

2. Represent Clients in Limited-jurisdiction Civil Law Matters

What does “limited-jurisdiction” mean? At the current time, LPs are limited to representing clients in civil matters where the matter in controversy does not exceed $10,000 (ten thousand dollars), exclusive of fees and costs. This allows the matter to stay within the jurisdiction of county justice courts or municipal courts. Such matters can include landlord-tenant disputes, contract disputes, neighbor and HOA disputes, personal injury matters such as car accidents and dog bites, small claims matters (in an advisory capacity only; legal representation is prohibited in small claims court), and civil traffic tickets.

An LP can be an invaluable resource in this area because many lawyers won't touch such cases. Why? Simply put, these cases, with smaller claims, are not cost-effective for many lawyers. This leaves many clients wondering where to turn. They want and need help, but they can't find an attorney who will give them the time of day. An LP can help fill this gap in availability (and willingness) of representation.

3. Offer Legal Advice

Legal issues can be daunting, particularly for individuals unfamiliar with legal processes or terminology.

Legal Paraprofessionals are fully licensed to provide legal advice tailored to their clients' situations.

• They can help clients understand their rights and options under Arizona law.
